Between the Simpsons and Cardi B, the Balenciaga SS22 show breaks the codes

Last weekend in Paris, Demna Gvasalia presented the spring-summer 2022 collection for Balenciaga. As usual, the Georgian put on an unusual show blurring class boundaries. The Châtelet theatre saw a mix of models and VIP guests on the red carpet, including Cardi B, Isabelle Hupert, Ella Emhoff, Naomi Campbell and even the Simpsons.

Although it is not surprising that Demna Gvasalia likes to act (witness the Afterworld show and her latest collaboration with Fornite), the surprise effect was still there. On a screen set up on stage, we can see guests walking the red carpet, some posing for the photographers. Many faces are recognisable, including artists Dev Hynes, Cardi B and Offset, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valletta, Mark Tuan, actor Elliot Page, Isabelle Huppert and Ella Emhoff.

The special feature? The models present to unveil the looks of the new collection blend in with the guests. Demna Gvasalia remains true to his DNA with oversized or body-hugging dresses, suits with careful tailoring and XXL shoulders, dark and loose denim jackets and jeans, casual aviator jackets, tracksuits and fishnet tops. In addition, 95.2% of the materials and prints are, according to the house, certified sustainable. Finally, guests and models alike were treated to an episode of The Simpsons, specially created for the occasion, in which the iconic characters were under the spotlight on the Balenciaga catwalk.
