Beyoncé, Zendaya, James Harden, Tommy Hilfiger, American stars are snapping up his collections. But who is Romeo Hunte?
A precocious designer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Romeo Hunte made a name for himself at an early age. Despite two tempting offers – full athletic scholarships in athletics – the 13-year-old refused to enter the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). The third offer proved to be the right one, as Hunte ended up attending the state university to learn design for fashion.
2014, the explosion. A year after founding his eponymous brand, Romeo Hunte became a personal shopper before joining the marketing department of Prada. It was by becoming a stylist for celebrities that his name became known in the American fashion world. Her clients? Zendaya, Beyoncé. These achievements were enough to take her brand to a new level. Other celebrities such as Maluma, James Harden or Michelle Obama are enough to highlight his singular style: a mix of luxurious and colourful outerwear with his passion for art and pop culture.
Avant-garde and full of detail, Romeo’s fashion breaks down notions of gender. The pieces tell a story of transition from the outside to the inside with impeccable precision. According to Vogue, Romeo Hunte’s aesthetic would redefine the notion of the “American brand”, in 2021 no less. No wonder this sensibility caught the eye of preppy brand Tommy Hilfiger. For the heritage brand, Romeo Hunte imagined a collection of archival pieces, a bold and vibrant bridge between the styles of Manhattan and his hometown, Brooklyn. Romeo Hunte’s capsule collection pays homage to his younger days, when he assembled his mother’s vintage clothes to create new pieces. Precocious child?
