The first Diesel collection under the watchful eye of Glenn Martens

Appointed Diesel’s new creative director a few months ago, Glenn Martens reinvents the Italian brand with his taste for hybridity while sublimating its denim heritage. Discover the entire Diesel Spring/Summer 2022 collection unveiled at Milan Fashion Week through a short film.

At the head of Y/Project’s creation since 2013, the talent of Belgian Glenn Martens has also attracted Renzo Rosso’s label, Diesel, founded in 1978. The goal? To revive the image of a brand that is losing momentum and to bring a breath of fresh air to the creative process. In October 2020, Glenn Martens accepted the challenge, having already collaborated with Diesel on the Red Tag Project. As a designer considered a huge talent to be followed closely, Milan Fashion Week was rubbing its hands at the idea of discovering this new adventure. And they were not disappointed. Co-directed with London artist and director Frank Lebon and with original music by Leon Vynehall, the short film follows the journey of a heroine reminiscent of Leeloo, the heroine of Luc Besson’s film The Fifth Element, through four distinct universes.

A festive, nocturnal atmosphere, a trip down a busy street, a parade out of a lift reminiscent of an office, and a focus on a conceptual world that echoes the planet Mars. Each chapter presents pieces that are true to the Glenn Martens DNA: asymmetry is invited on skirts or laser-cut tops, while 5-pocket denim trousers are extended to pointy pumps or Santiags. And while denim is often criticized for its environmental impact, the launch of Diesel Library is a sustainable solution. On the agenda? A permanent line with recycled fibres, chrome-free tanning and water-saving treatments. In short, Glenn Martens was right for Diesel and we can’t wait to see these highly desirable pieces on the market.
