It’s one of Nike’s most beloved yet timeless vintage silhouettes, and one that has definitely made the sportswear giant successful. The Cortez has made history for athletes at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, for the series Charlie’s Angels with Farah Fawcett and for the 1994 cult film Forest Gump. Not to mention the fact that all subsequent generations have embraced this formidably effective sneaker. The Nike Cortez will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022 and is already being offered a collaboration with Union and the rumour of several models with Sacai…
An anniversary event
If we know how Nike celebrates the anniversaries of its models, like the Air Force 1 Mid which will celebrate its 40th anniversary with Stüssy in 2022, the Cortez will celebrate its 50 years of history. It was in 1972 that Bill Bowerman, co-founder of Nike, unveiled the iconic Cortez silhouette, a running shoe that featured the Carolyn Davidson-designed swoosh logo for the first time. Two years later, in 1974, the shoe was given a women’s version called the señorita cortez. The last fifty years have seen many beautiful editions of the model: whether it is the tiger version of 2010, the incredible platform version of Comme des Garçons or the one imagined by Kendrick Lamar in 2018.
A Nike Cortez x Union collaboration already unveiled
In 2022, the legendary Los Angeles shop Union will join forces with Nike around the Cortez, in two colourways. One gorgeous version comes in beige, red and khaki while a second iteration will revolve around black, turquoise and green. Both have a bold vintage look, highlighted by inserts that combine both suede and textile. The co-branding is displayed on the tongue, on the back of the heel and on the insole. The highlight of these pairs? A superb cork sole giving it a delicious retro look. No official release date yet but the Nike Cortez x Union collaboration will arrive in 2022.
A rumoured Nike Cortez x Sacai
Chitose Abe’s Sacai label, which has become a regular of successful collaborations with Nike, will certainly offer a Cortez variation as well. Rumours suggest that the Sacai x Nike Cortez collaboration will feature a range of multicoloured colourways and the usual stacked details: double swoosh, double tabs, double laces or double midsoles. Keep an eye out!
